02 LCHS EXHIBITION

Year: Spring 2024
Course: Advanced Design Studios
Instructor: Francesca Liuni, Steven Lubar
Location: Little Compton, RI
Constructed: July 2024

This exhibition explores the intertwined histories of land, transportation, and community in Little Compton. A collaborative project between RISD’s design studios and Brown University’s Curatorship course, it was developed during the semester and constructed over the summer. The exhibition opens in July 2024.

SITE PLAN

The exhibition reveals the untold stories of European settlers expanding into Sakkonet tribal lands, uncovering narratives foundational to Little Compton’s history. Through an immersive experience, visitors are guided through four sections, each unveiling a new layer of the story.

SECTION 1
PART OF A WIDER WORLD
SECTION 2
OBJECTS AND IDEAS ON THE MOVE
SECTION 3
DRIVING DEVELOPMENT
SECTION 4
THREE SIDES TO THE SEA

Life-size images are carefully edite and positioned as visual anchors throughout the exhibition. They bridge between the past and present, connecting the visitors to the historical narratives . The images not only create a sense of scale and presence but also foster a deeper engagement with the history of Little Compton by making it more tangible and immediate.

CURATIONAL DESIGN & RENDERINGS
One of the exhibition’s most striking features is its bold use of bright yellow. This vibrant color acts as both a visual and psychological anchor, altering the perception of space. It enhances the sense of openness and modernity while providing a stark contrast to the historical content. Strategically applied throughout the exhibition, it creates a dynamic rhythm, guiding visitors and highlighting key moments in the narrative.

ASSEMBLY SHEETS

We shaped the exhibition’s narrative, selected artifacts, designed labels, and managed the 3D design, graphics, lighting, and fabrication.
